1. When it was towards the end of World War II, a group of British Air Force personnel were sent to Cambridge to learn Russian. They would have to use Russian when they were to fulfill an important mission(完成一项重要使命). They fully understood the importance of learning that language, since their success would heavily depend on the fact that they could use the language as fluently as a native speaker did. They spend much time reading or listening to the materials in that language. They practiced speaking the language both in and out of class. Those students learnt fantastically fast. It was successful language training for those British Air Force personnel.
Key Points: 1) highly motivated
2) take initiative in learning
3) much exposure to the language being learned
4)use the language as much as possible
2. Nowadays people are always busy. Li Jian is not an exception and he has many roles to play, son of his parents, father of his three-year old baby, a dutiful clerk in a big company, and a bread winner of his family. He has now become an autonomous learner of English, a new role to play. His main problems are as the following:
i) He has little time for self-study and sometimes he is not able to come to tutorial.
ii) His family live in a small flat and he has no study for his regular learning
iii) He has no regular teacher to get help or advice and no classmates to practice spoken English with.
iv) He has few resources to resort to, no library to borrow reference books from, and no audio-visual tapes of English programmes.
Key Points:
1) make a planner and abide by it
2) He has to turn his bedroom or dining-room into study for regular study
3) find a competent teacher or English learner to seek help from and he may practice his spoken English by talking to himself or into a mirror.
4) borrow the reference books or audio-visual tapes of English programmes from the self-access centre. Learn his course books by doing tasks in it instead of just reading everything in it.
3. Zhang watched his friend Lili talking freely with a British journalist. He could not help admiring her. He wanted to do the same. After a few months hard work, he found his English still at a low level. He became totally disappointed and lost his confidence. He decided that he was not the one to learn a foreign language and would give up.
Key Points:
1) Be realistic. Rome was not built in a day.
2) Be pleased with himself and do not fail to see the daily achievement.
3) No one is free from frustrations, but what one can do is to try best to overcome them.
4) Build up self-confidence and it holds a key to anything one is doing.
4. It seems that Wu Heng has been learning English for quite a long time. The problem is he hasn’t learnt it continuously. Now and then he stops learning it when he feels that he has something else to do. When he starts again, he usually finds that he has forgotten what he has learned. He knows that his low efficiency and effectiveness is due to the fact that he is not persistent in learning a foreign language.
Key Points:
On-and-off learning habit is the deadly enemy of language learning. Language learning needs constant recycling of what was previously learned. Three strategies can be used to develop your persistence.
1) Rewarding Strategy
2) Peer Strategy
3) Watchword Strategy
II. Read the following passages written by a diligent student. List the things he has learned or got at Radio & TV University. Then analize your own roles, specially your new role as an autonomous learner (60%)
I am glad to become a new student at Radio & Television University. I am interested in English, so I attend a night school.
I am very busy. I have already quite a few roles in me. I work in a factory, my work is onerous. At the end of day I am often tired. At home I have to do a little of housework. I used to amuse myself and sleep after work, but now I have no time, just because I have a new important role---an English learner.
I like this new role----an English learner. An English learner to me means I should set aside enough time for study. I have to pass all course of my major and earn 71 credits at least. If I want to obtain a degree, I should learn a second foreign language, Japanese or French and pass its examination. And I must have at least 75 points for each compulsory course. I also have to pass the examination of EMT (English Major Test, band 4), and dissertation evaluation.
If I learn very well, I may listen to English at normal speed, and can speak English fluently with correct intonation, be able to talk with other people to express my ideas.
But what to do to play a new role well? After reading A guide to success 1---Orientation, I know. Firstly, I should work out a personal study plan which includes how many courses to learn in 3 years and in each term; how much time to spend on specific learning tasks in a day , how to treat the relation between work and learning.
In order to learn well, I change my previous learning ways. I began to preview the new lesson and mark what I do not understand before class, after class I review the teacher has taught, write the exercise assigned. I listen to the tape or broadcast so as to improve my listening. When I am in any difficulty or doubt, I would seek help from local tutors and the members in my study group, or at BBS, or in some other ways.
For the purpose of helping students learn well, Radio & Television University has provided so many study resources, such as: CAI、VBI、www.crtvu.edu.cn information and teaching at net...... I can learn conveniently.
At Radio & Television University, I learn many things, the most important of which for me is how to learn. I believe I will have a good time.
